Monday Memo – Abraham

The earliest days of the life of Abraham are a bit foggy. He lived in the east, in a place called Ur. He lived with his wife, his father and brothers. The place where they lived was given over to pagan worship. Men worshipped numerous gods, each with responsibility for some aspect of their lives. But Abraham’s family was different. His father, Terah, was told by God to leave Ur and travel west. Now we know that thier travels would eventually end in the conquest, by their distant family, of the land of Canaan.

God called their family to a great leap of faith. They were to leave everything they knew and travel to a place not yet revealed to them (Genesis 11:31,32). And that is exactly what they did.

Perhaps God has given you a great leap of faith this week. There may be some huge question mark on your horizon that has you worried or concerned. Maybe changes at you job are concerning you. Like everyone else you may be troubled over rising gasoline costs and increasing inflation. There’s plenty to worry us if we allow it.

Jesus taught that worry was unproductive. “do not be ??worried about your ??life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing” (Matthew 6:25). He continues in verse 27: “who of you by being ??worried can ??add a single ??hour to his ??life?” The idea from Jesus is that worry affects nothing. We correct no problems by worry and fix no issues. The key is to trust in God and obey him. Notice verse 33: “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be added to you.”

Abraham, centuries before Jesus, understood that obedience to God was most important.

This week, trust God and put your concerns in his care – like Abraham. You will be richly blessed.
