“For what will a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Mark 8:37)
It’s been a long time since I was really shocked by anything I’ve seen in our present culture. Morals are almost invisible. There is no shame anymore. Sinners are now victims and there no longer exists a right way or a wrong way.
However, it was surprising and unsettling to read the Associated Press story about Walter Scott, age 24 of New Zealand. Scott sold his soul to Hell for $3800. Actually, it’s Hell Pizza, a New Zealand pizza chain, and they will actually pay him for a deed to his soul. Perhaps some will chalk it up to fun and games but Scott’s comments suggest just how far some have fallen into sin and despair. “I can’t see it, touch it or feel it, but I can sell it, so I’m going to palm it off to the highest bidder,” said Scott.
The soul is nothing to be trifled with. Indeed, it is the soul that shall give an account of our lives (Luke 12:20) and shall live on eternally.
Perhaps Scott should be applauded for his deal. After all, many surrender their souls for far less. Some sell their souls for a drink of immorality, others for a bowl of wanton neglect while others trade for a banquet of material comforts and spiritual emptiness. At least Scott got some cash out of the deal.
The interesting question remains: Does Scott have a buy-back provision in that contract?
